Examples of Online Courses

Cow's Eye Dissection. This is one of the most popular demonstrations at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. It has helped people satisfy their curiosity about what is inside an eye. The material presented here is meant not to replace the act of dissecting a cow's eye, but rather to enhance the experience.

IE5 in the Classroom. A course brought to you by Digital Education Network, which offers 7th through 12th grade students a chance to expand their knowledge in many areas. Be sure to check out all their courses!

Marine Biology and Oceanography Course. Oregon State University offers a high school Marine Biology and Oceanography course over a C-Band satellite that provides coverage to Canada and the United States, including Alaska. The course, Exploring Our Oceans, is taught by Hilary Staatz, who received the 1995 national award for Excellence in Distance Learning Teaching from the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA). The course consists of three live broadcasts and on-site lab activities per week. Schools may begin the course in the Fall or sign up for the second semester beginning in January. Hilary has taught the course for four years and has enrolled students from Missouri to Alaska. 

Mega-Mathematics. This project is intended to bring unusual and important mathematical ideas to elementary school classrooms so that young people and their teachers can think about them together.

Paradigm Online Writing Assistant. A frames-based site concentrates on helping students think about how to conceive a writing project. This site contains sections on discovering what to write, organizing, revising and editing your writing, various types of essays, including thesis/support, argumentative, exploratory, and informal, and documenting sources.

Project Cape Town: Education and Integration in South Africa. A multimedia teaching case designed to encourage reflective practice in teachers. The case draws its material from three schools that were among the first to become integrated in South Africa.

Project Primary. A collaborative effort to "produce hands-on activities for the teaching of science." Activities in Botany, Chemistry, Children's Literature, Geology, Physics, and Zoology, are simply explained and designed to engage children's curiosity and to help them learn. Quest. This interactive education center, sponsored by NASA and the High Performance and Computing and Communication program, aims to encourage use of the Internet, and its underlying information technologies, as basic tools for learning in K-12 schools.

The Renaissance. A course brought to you by Annenberg/CPB Exhibits. This exhibit describes the changes that occurred in Europe during the fourteenth through the sixteenth centuries. Be sure to check out the other exhibits as well.

Whole Frog Project. The goal of the project is to provide high school biology classes the ability to explore the anatomy of a frog by using data from high resolution MRI imaging and from mechanical sectioning, together with 3D surface and volume rendering software to visualize the anatomical structures of the intact animal.

The World Wide Web Courseware Developers Home Page. This site contains samples of 165 university level courses.

Teaching and Learning on the WWW has links to over 800 examples of how the web is being used as a medium for learning.
