Oklahoma State University: Improving Math and Science in Middle Schools
Oklahoma State University, in collaboration with middle schools, school districts, and the Oklahoma Department of Education will design, develop, test, and share a series of interlinking learning modules to create and promote important elements of educational reform by providing web-based instructional lessons to middle school science and math teachers. There will be five modules, including algebra, biology, physics, chemistry, and web development, with the science modules advocating and demonstrating an inquiry-based science pedagogy.
Some goals of the program include: using a wide range of technologies to serve middle school teachers - and ultimately students - whose educational opportunities are limited because of geography, size or scarcity of human and/or financial resources; providing innovative, interactive, challenging, high-quality content in math and science; making classroom learning more effective by providing web-based in-service teacher education programs that include significant, subject-specific pedagogical components in math and the sciences; and evaluating our efforts to improve teaching by using ongoing, rigorous assessment analyses and disseminating the results of our project to teachers and colleagues throughout the world.
