What You Need to Know
We assume that you have done at least a little surfing on your own, and that you already know something about the content you want to teach online. We also assume you have some classroom teaching experience. We'll be making frequent comparisons between the online and classroom settings. But we don't expect your strengths to include graphic design, technological expertise, or any experience teaching via any distance medium. You don't need to be a Web geek to profit from this site. You don't need to know HTML. (Of course, anything you do know will be an asset!)

Browsers, Networks, Plug-ins
All you need to participate in the core activities we propose is access to a browser that is JavaScript enabled. You should be viewing us now with Netscape Navigator , Version 3.0 or higher, Netscape Communicator 4.0 , Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 , or something at least as capable. JavaScript should be turned on, and your environment should not block JavaScript activity, (This can be a problem in some institutional settings, where users access the Web from behind a firewall or other safeguard.)

We will also suggest (but not require) some activities that demand additional no-cost or low-cost software. When we do, we will point you to the software you need. Additionally, some sites we recommend may require Shockwave" or other plug-ins. Your browser will notify you when it needs a plug-in and give you the chance to go get it.

External links
Our site includes many links to materials and tools that reside on servers we don't manage. For obvious reasons, we can't control what -- or even whether -- other people publish. All links were current when this resource was first published. But currency decays. Servers close, sites go down, pages move or disappear. "Link rot" is inevitable. If you find a broken link here, try it again later. If the break is more than a temporary server failure, please let us know.

We're also going to suggest sites that offer you free Web space or other useful services in exchange for the right to display banner advertising on your space there. Be advised that such servers often host a wide variety of content -- some of it "adult" or otherwise potentially objectionable. Please understand that we have no control over anything you might find on someone else's site. Our role is simply to tell you the resource exists. The decision to use it in your own project must be yours alone.
